After my cat died, he returned to me via my dreams. He was very entertaining and one night danced on a stage while wearing a top hat. I woke laughing. I told my friends about Ozzie dancing for me. They said it was nice that I felt better--like I was making something up. But to me, this was an actual happening. So I'd propose that the dreamer would be not just a jumble of neurotransmitters firing and making imagery, but also a psychic connection with a higher aspect of oneself, guiding and communicating with the dreamer. If one were to think of it this way, then there could be a symbolic language to interpret, not one that is universal, but personal to oneself. I'm not saying that universal symbols aren't there, but I think the personal symbols are there as well. It's tweaked.
